A karaoke video is fine for the moment, a proper cover song is made to last.
Cover recordings on a phone, with karaoke apps or backing videos are fine in the moment: quickly made, fun among friends, as short lived as a snapshot. But when the song really matters, when it recalls a particular person, when it is meant as a lasting gift, when it should exist permanently for a wedding, a birthday, an anniversary or a memorial, a setup at home is no longer enough. You need real studio conditions: a professional microphone for your voice, an acoustically treated room, a clean mix, proper mastering. Above all: personal guidance from someone who understands what the song means to you rather than simply processing a recording order.
At Tonstudio Leipzig you get three cover versions, depending on what you want. A vocal cover on the isolated original backing: modern audio tools remove the original vocals from your favourite song, and you sing live in the studio over the instrumental that remains. That is the fastest route from the wish to a finished recording, and with clearly produced pop songs it is a matter of two to three studio hours. A new interpretation with your own arrangement: the song is musically rebuilt from the ground up. Pop becomes acoustic, rock becomes a piano ballad, classical becomes a modern sound, with your own key and your own tempo. The most personal musical result. A version with changed lyrics: the song keeps its musical clothing, but the words are rewritten for the person receiving it, for the couple, or for the occasion. Suddenly the verses tell your story rather than the one in the original.
One thing matters especially: you do not have to be able to sing professionally. Most clients are in a studio for the first time with no experience at all, many of them hobby singers who otherwise only sing in the shower or in the car. You get personal guidance through the recording: tips on breathing and where the voice sits, notes on phrasing the song, plenty of attempts without pressure, and with modern pitch correction (Melodyne) small inaccuracies are cleaned up without it ever sounding artificial. On request the whole thing comes as a CD with an individually designed cover, so the gift becomes something you can hold. Three ways in, depending on what you need: straight through the shop for a vocal cover, and a paid first consultation for a new interpretation or changed lyrics. Cover songs are a private service here. For commercial use there is the business site.
Six typical occasions for which cover recordings become especially moving gifts.
Cover songs carry a particular emotion, because they connect familiar music with a personal story. Here are six situations in which cover recordings regularly become unforgettable gifts or memories.
Wedding
Your wedding song, sung by you
The song that was playing on your first date. The song you first danced to together. The song that belongs to your love story like nothing else. Instead of playing the original at the wedding, you record your own cover version, sung by one of you, by both of you together, or as a family version with your parents and siblings. That recording becomes a lasting wedding gift to yourselves, one you can still listen to in ten, twenty or fifty years. Or a surprise at a proposal, a gift on an anniversary, a declaration of love in music.
A birthday present
Their favourite song, sung for them
Your mother turns 60, your father turns 70, your grandmother celebrates 80. The most important person in your life has a favourite song they have loved for decades: the Beatles, a classic from home, a folk song, a pop song from their own youth. You sing that song in the studio, perhaps with your siblings, perhaps solo, perhaps together with the grandchildren, and hand over the finished CD with a personalised cover as a birthday present. These recordings are often played to the whole family in front of all the guests, a moment everyone remembers.
A memorial service
A song of remembrance for someone who has died
When someone you love has died, music often helps with remembering and with letting go. Their favourite song becomes a cover recording, sung by you, by the family, by their closest friends. These recordings are sometimes played at the memorial itself, sometimes given to the closest relatives, sometimes kept only within the family. For these particularly sensitive recordings the guidance is correspondingly careful: no rush, no pressure, enough time for the emotionally difficult moments. If tears come while you sing, that is part of it.
A family cover
Several generations singing together
Grandparents, parents, children, grandchildren, all together at the microphone, all together on one recording. Family covers are especially moving gifts for big birthdays, golden weddings, family anniversaries, or as a recording across several generations. Technically, either everyone sings at the microphone at the same time for an authentic family feeling, or everyone is recorded separately and the tracks are layered, which also works when not everyone can come at once. For families spread across Germany, weekend appointments with everyone who can travel are common.
A first time in a studio
Beginners with no studio experience
You have always wanted to sing in a real studio but never dared. You are a hobby singer, you otherwise only sing in the shower or in the car, but for a particular occasion, or simply for yourself, you want a proper recording of you singing your favourite song. Cover recordings are the ideal way into a studio: you do not have to bring songs you composed, you do not have to sing professionally, and you get personal guidance through the recording. Many people in a studio for the first time are surprised afterwards at how professional their own voice sounds once it is recorded and treated properly.
Personalised lyrics
A favourite song with rewritten words as a declaration of love
A well known song gets new, personal words. Suddenly the verses tell your love story, your grandmother's anecdotes, the most important moments in the life of the person whose birthday it is. This version is especially moving for a proposal, an anniversary, a golden wedding, a big birthday or a very personal declaration of love. If you need help with the rewriting, there is the additional service of songwriting support, where the personal text is worked out together before the studio recording, so that the words really carry rather than only sounding creative.
The three cover versions
Three routes from a quick vocal cover to a complete new interpretation.
Three clear versions, depending on what you want and how much work it involves. With a clear plan and a simple vocal cover you can book directly in the shop. For a new interpretation or changed lyrics, the paid first consultation is the sensible way in.
Version 1, vocal cover
You sing over the isolated original backing
The fastest route to a finished cover recording. Modern vocal isolation removes the original vocals from your favourite song and leaves the instrumental behind. You sing live in the studio over that backing, with all the effects and atmosphere of the original, only with your voice. It works especially well with clearly produced modern pop songs. About two to three studio hours, often done in a morning or an afternoon. Bookable directly in the studio shop. Simply name the song when you get in touch and I check beforehand whether the vocal isolation works cleanly for it.
Version 2, new interpretation
Your favourite song rebuilt musically from the ground up
The most creative version. Your song is musically rebuilt: pop becomes acoustic with piano or guitar, rock becomes a piano ballad, classical becomes a modern sound, with your own key, tempo and instrumentation. Here my experience as a pianist at the desk counts especially: with piano interpretations the recording benefits from my own playing practice and musical understanding. This version is particularly moving when a pop song becomes an intimate acoustic take, or when a quiet ballad suddenly gains energy. A paid first consultation in the studio is recommended, so that the arrangement can be developed together.
Version 3, modified version
An existing song with personalised lyrics
The song keeps its musical clothing, but the words are rewritten for the person receiving it, for the couple or for the occasion. Suddenly the verses tell your love story, your grandmother's anecdotes, the stages in the life of the person celebrating. An especially moving version for very personal declarations of love, big birthdays and weddings. If you need help with the rewriting, there is the additional service of songwriting support, and we work out the words together before the studio recording. A paid first consultation in the studio is recommended, because changing lyrics needs careful planning.
Recording several people together
For wedding songs both partners often sing, for birthdays several family members come together, for memorials the closest relatives gather. Several people can either stand at the microphone at the same time for a shared family feeling, or be recorded separately and layered, which also works when not everyone can come at once. Simply tell me when booking how many people are coming, and the time is planned accordingly.
A CD with an individual cover design
The recording becomes a gift you can hold. A professionally produced CD with an individually designed cover, if you want with a photo of the person or the occasion, with personalised text or a booklet. For weddings often as a vinyl single in the wedding design, for birthdays as a birthday CD, for memorials as a CD of remembrance for the relatives. On request there is also a designed download link for sharing digitally. There is more about this under CD cover and CD production.
Help with rewriting the lyrics
If you want to rewrite the words of the song for a particular person, a couple or an occasion, but find the rewriting too hard on your own, there is the additional service of songwriting support. We work out the personal text together before the studio recording: you tell me about the person or the occasion, and I help with the wording, the rhymes and fitting it to the rhythm and the language. So that the words really carry rather than only sounding creative.
Three factors that separate this cover production from karaoke recordings.
Karaoke apps, backing videos and home recording setups are fine in the moment. Three factors make the difference in a professional cover production.
Personal guidance for people in a studio for the first time
Classic recording studios often expect you to know what you are doing as a singer: rehearsed material, professional breathing, confidence at the microphone. With cover recordings it is different: most clients are in a studio for the first time with no experience, many of them hobby singers who otherwise only sing in the shower. Here you get personal guidance through the recording: tips on breathing and where the voice sits, notes on phrasing the song, and enough time for plenty of attempts without pressure. That is often what separates a tense recording from a genuinely good one.
Vocal isolation and pitch correction as technical support
Two modern technologies make cover production far more possible today than a few years ago. Vocal isolation separates the original vocals out of your favourite song with modern audio tools, so you can sing over the original backing itself, not a karaoke version from the internet but the real instrumental world of the original. Pitch correction with Melodyne cleans up small inaccuracies in your voice without it sounding artificial or faked. Together these two tools mean that hobby singers can get the studio quality that used to be reserved for professionals.
A pianist at the desk for emotional new interpretations
For new interpretations with your own arrangement, my experience as a pianist at the desk is especially valuable. A pop song becomes an intimate piano ballad, a hit from the charts becomes a modern acoustic version, a rock number becomes a gentle folk song. I guide you as a pianist and audio engineer, with my piano of over a hundred years and years of playing on the streets in the centre of Leipzig, and I bring a musical understanding that goes beyond recording technique. With cover interpretations built on piano, you can hear it.
These three factors, beginner friendly personal guidance, modern technical support and musical understanding in new interpretations, are what separate a karaoke recording at home from a professional cover production that genuinely works as a gift.
What stays
What comes out of a cover recording, beyond the hours in the studio.
A good cover recording works differently from other recordings: it is usually a gift, a memory or a particular moment. Six stages show how that unfolds.
01 At the first listen
You hear your own voice recorded properly
The moment you first hear the finished vocal cover after the recording is often a surprise for people in a studio for the first time. You recognise your voice, and also do not: it sounds cleaner, fuller and more professional than in the shower or in the car. Many clients are surprised afterwards at how professional their own voice sounds once it is recorded and treated properly.
02 At the handover
The moment the gift is given
In most cover productions the finished recording is a gift for a particular person. The moment of handing it over, the CD with its personalised cover, the download link, the first time you listen to it together, often becomes the emotional peak of the occasion. At big birthdays the recording is sometimes played to all the guests. At weddings one partner surprises the other with the finished cover. At memorials the recording is given as something lasting to remember by.
03 At the occasion itself
A wedding, a birthday, an anniversary: the recording becomes part of the moment
When the cover song is played at the occasion it was made for, at the wedding, the birthday, the anniversary, it lands differently from any karaoke track from the internet. The guests hear a real professional recording, they hear the voices of the people who matter most, and they hear the rewritten words with their personal references if there are any. Those moments stay.
04 In the weeks afterwards
The recording gets played again and again
In the weeks and months after the occasion, the cover recording often gets played again and again. The person who received it plays it to themselves, shares it with other family members, puts it on their phone. Unlike a lovely speech or a single moment, the recording stays permanently available and can be experienced again at any time. With wedding songs the recording often becomes an annual tradition, played every year on the anniversary.
05 At family occasions
The recording travels through the family
With family cover recordings the result often travels through the whole family: grandparents share it with their friends, parents show it to relatives further away, siblings keep it as a memory of a particular family moment. In large families cover recordings sometimes become a tradition: a new cover every year for the family birthday, a collection of recordings building up over the years.
06 Over time
A lasting memory of a particular moment
Unlike most gifts, cover recordings do not fade. They do not gather dust in a cupboard, they do not break, they are not forgotten. In ten, twenty or fifty years the recording can still be played, and it often becomes the most emotionally dense memory of that occasion. With recordings involving family members who have since died, the cover becomes a priceless memory of the voice of someone loved.
Preparation
Six points that make your cover recording better.
Good preparation makes the difference between a hectic first session and relaxed, emotionally rich studio time. Six points to think about before the recording.
1
Choosing the song
Which song exactly should it be?
The most important point: the song has to be clear. Title, artist, ideally the album or year as well. Name it when you get in touch, so the vocal isolation can be checked in advance for a vocal cover, or so the original is clear for a new interpretation or a modified version. If you have several songs in mind, name them all and we decide together which fits best.
2
Version
Which of the three versions fits?
A vocal cover over the original backing (the fastest route, bookable directly in the shop)? A new interpretation with a completely new arrangement (the most creative version, first consultation recommended)? A modified version with changed lyrics (for personal declarations of love, first consultation recommended)? If you are unsure, ask briefly on WhatsApp and you get a recommendation based on your occasion.
3
Occasion
For which occasion and which person?
A wedding, a birthday, a memorial, a family occasion, a declaration of love, a personal keepsake? When is the occasion, so the recording is ready in time? Who is the gift for, and are there references or anecdotes that should go into changed lyrics? That background helps make the cover genuinely fit.
4
Who sings?
You alone, several people, the whole family?
A solo recording by you, a duet with your partner, a family recording across generations, a cover with friends? With several people: everyone in the studio at once, or spread across several appointments? For families from different cities, a double day with everyone who can travel may work. Simply give the number of people when booking, and the studio time is planned accordingly.
5
How it is handed over
How should the gift be given?
Purely as a digital file by cloud link? A CD with an individually designed cover, through the additional service of CD cover and CD production? A vinyl single for a particularly special wedding gift? A booklet with the words and photos? It is best to settle this when you first get in touch, so the handover can be planned calmly. Vinyl and CD productions in particular need lead time.
6
Preparing your voice
Relaxed in voice on the day
Sleep early the night before, drink enough water, avoid shouting and clearing your throat. On the day: no hoarseness, no cold coming on, a relaxed throat. If you have a cold, call in good time and move the appointment. A lost voice otherwise ruins the whole session. Listen to the song several times beforehand and sing along, but do not overpractise. Freshness matters more than perfection.
How a session runs
How your cover recording runs actually goes.
Four clear steps from the first inquiry to the finished recording, so that you know exactly what to expect.
01
An inquiry with the song and the occasion
You write a short email or WhatsApp message with the following: which song exactly, which of the three versions (vocal cover, new interpretation, modified version), for which occasion and which person, when the occasion is, and how many people will sing. For vocal covers I check the vocal isolation for your song in advance. For a new interpretation or a modified version I invite you to a paid first consultation in the studio.
02
Preparation and first consultation (for the larger versions)
For vocal covers you can book an appointment directly in the shop. For a new interpretation or a modified version you come to a paid first consultation in the studio: you see the room, we talk about the arrangement or the changed lyrics, and I develop a concept with you. If you need help with the words, I plan separate preparation time for that.
03
The studio appointment and the recording
You come to Tonstudio Leipzig, we settle in briefly, and then the recording starts. For a vocal cover you sing over the prepared isolated backing across several takes. For a new interpretation I record the new arrangement tracks and then your vocals. For a modified version you sing the rewritten words across several takes. With several people the order is planned, or everyone records at once. I guide you while you sing, allow plenty of attempts without pressure, and use pitch correction only where it genuinely helps.
04
Mix, mastering and handover
After the recording I mix and master the result: the balance between vocals and backing, the effects, the final polish. Handover as a WAV or MP3 file by cloud link. On request there is also a CD production with an individual cover design, through the additional service of CD cover and CD production. If you get in touch in good time before the occasion, the handover can be planned properly. For short notice inquiries I organise what is possible.

Families travelling in
Several family members together
For family cover recordings across generations, people often travel in from different cities: grandparents from the south, parents from the east, grandchildren from Berlin. Combining everyone into a weekend appointment usually makes sense. Describe briefly who is coming from where when you get in touch, and we find a suitable date.
On site in the studio
You come to the studio to record
Cover recordings take place in the studio, recordings away from the studio are not part of the offer. You need to bring nothing but your voice and, if relevant, the song you have in mind. Water, music stands, headphones and all the equipment are here.
For a long journey
Combining several cover projects
If you travel from further away, it is often worth combining several cover projects: a solo cover, a family cover and perhaps songwriting support, all in one weekend block. That makes the journey worthwhile and covers several occasions at once. Simply describe what you are planning when you get in touch, and it goes into one proposed appointment.

Related services
What often belongs with a cover song production with a vocal recording.
Cover songs are often part of a larger gift idea or a plan for an occasion. Here are six related services that are frequently booked alongside.
Write to me briefly: which song exactly, which of the three versions (vocal cover, new interpretation, or a modified version with changed lyrics), for which occasion and which person, when the occasion is, and how many people will sing. Simple vocal covers can be booked directly in the studio shop. For a new interpretation or a modified version, book the paid first consultation in the studio: I get to know you and your plan, you see the room, and together we develop a concept that fits. For short questions beforehand, about whether your song suits vocal isolation, about possible dates, about travelling here or about which version fits, a WhatsApp message or a short email works too. People in a studio for the first time are especially welcome, and you do not have to be able to sing professionally. I take you through the recording calmly, honestly and with experience.
