DJ mixes recorded at home can sound strong at home, on Soundcloud they lose their punch.
That is not automatically your fault. Often it comes down to platform normalisation. Every streaming platform pulls all audio down to a standardised loudness, Spotify and Mixcloud to about minus 14 LUFS, Apple Music similarly, YouTube likewise, while Soundcloud can come across considerably louder, up to about minus 8 LUFS. If you upload your unmastered DJ mix at, say, minus 18 LUFS, it stays quiet on Spotify. If you upload it at about minus 8 LUFS without mastering for the platform, you get distortion from the platform compression. Professionally mastered DJ mixes on Soundcloud reach about minus 8 LUFS with clean playback, and that is the loudness level at which successful DJ mixes compete. If your mix stays below it, it sounds audibly weaker than the competing mixes displayed right next to it, which affects click rates, listening time and booking enquiries directly. DJ mix mastering is exactly what that calls for: your mix is lifted to the platform standard, with the additional sonic refinement that a recording at home normally lacks.
At my studio, DJ mix mastering is a specialist discipline in its own right, clearly separate from standard single track mastering and from vinyl mastering. The challenges are different: a typical streaming single master is about 3 to 5 minutes of music, while a DJ mix is 30 to 120 minutes of continuous audio, often with 15 to 30 different tracks from different sources. LUFS configuration for each platform: I prepare Soundcloud masters configured at about minus 8 LUFS for more punch, and streaming masters at about minus 14 LUFS for conformity with Spotify, Mixcloud and YouTube, depending on your platform strategy. Consistent loudness between the individual tracks in the mix: your mix probably combines tracks from Beatport (mastered in a modern way, loud), your own productions (often not finally mastered yet), vinyl rips (analogue, with different dynamics) and Bandcamp releases (mastered in various ways). In mastering I even out these differences, so that your mix works as a coherent set instead of a track by track patchwork. Bass management across long stretches of a set: with 60 to 90 minutes of material the bass energy has to stay consistent, and different genres and production decades have different bass profiles, which get harmonised in mastering. On top of that: stereo image work, true peak limiting against platform distortion and subtle saturation for the warmth typical of a DJ mix.

A Soundcloud mix
A DJ mix for a Soundcloud release with maximum punch
The most common use. You have recorded your DJ mix at home and want to release it on Soundcloud, the central DJ mix hub on the internet. Soundcloud allows considerably higher loudness than other platforms (about minus 8 LUFS), which means that professionally mastered competing mixes sound considerably punchier, louder and more energetic right next to your unmastered mix. With mastering your mix is lifted to the Soundcloud standard, with additional sonic refinement across the whole set. Sensible for regular Soundcloud uploads, for individual showcase mixes for special occasions, and for building a DJ profile to attract bookings.
A Mixcloud podcast
A monthly podcast series with a consistent sound
You run a regular DJ mix series, say a monthly podcast show, a weekly Mixcloud release, a series on particular genres or festivals. With regular releases, sonic consistency across the episodes becomes important to me: your audience should recognise you by the sound, whether it is episode 3 or episode 47. With mix series mastering a shared sound concept is developed: Mixcloud conform loudness of about minus 14 LUFS, a consistent EQ character, uniform bass management, a coherent stereo image. Every new episode is mastered within the same concept, so that your mix profile builds a continuous sonic identity.
Booking promotion
A DJ demo mix for clubs, festivals and label applications
You are applying to clubs for regular resident slots, to festivals for bookings, to labels for mix compilation series, or to booking agencies for representation. In every case your demo mix is your acoustic calling card. It is often judged within the first 60 seconds and then checked in a loud playback environment (studio monitors, club systems, the car test). With a booking promotion master your mix is optimised for strong impact: a Soundcloud loud version for online hosting at minus 8 LUFS, plus a club loud version for the PA test, with additional sonic refinement so that it convinces immediately on any system. Sensible when you are actively chasing bookings or building a career.
Radio / podcast
A radio show or audio podcast with a DJ mix element
You have a radio show on a station (FM, web radio, student radio) or produce an audio podcast with a DJ mix element, for example genre talk shows with mix segments, DJ profile interviews with mix examples, regular radio show formats. With radio mastering, different standards become relevant than with pure streaming platforms: radio stations often have their own loudness specifications and requirements for clean FM or DAB+ transmission. With podcast mastering, speech and music parts are balanced, so that speech is clearly intelligible, the music is not too dominant and the transitions between speech and music segments are smooth. When you ask, simply name the station, platform or podcast hosting service, and the right mastering configuration is chosen.
A live set
A live recording from a club, bar or festival
You played in a club, a bar, at a festival or at an event and recorded your DJ set live, either through the recording function of the DJ mixer, through USB recording on modern Pioneer DJM mixers, or through separate recording hardware in your setup. Live recordings often have particular challenges: variations in loudness depending on how you mixed in the live situation, occasional microphone use when an MC is involved, the atmosphere of the room (sometimes deliberately wanted as character), different recording levels when several sets are in one recording. With live set mastering the live atmosphere is preserved while the sonic problems of the live recording are corrected: consistent loudness, stabilised bass, stereo optimisation, adjustment to the platform LUFS.
An occasion mix
A wedding, birthday or best of the year mix as a present
DJ mixes for an occasion have a different character from pure career mixes, because they are produced for personal or family occasions: wedding DJs making a memento mix for the couple with all the tracks from the wedding evening, birthday mixes as a present for friends with their favourite songs, best of the year mixes as an annual gift to the listening community, themed mixes for particular moments in life. With occasion mix mastering the emotional effect of the mix is strengthened: clean transitions, balanced loudness across the whole stretch, sonic warmth instead of aggressive loudness, a clean streaming format for a Bandcamp download or cloud sharing. The way into DJ mix mastering. One DJ mix of typically 30 to 120 minutes is mastered for one specific platform: Soundcloud at about minus 8 LUFS for more punch, Mixcloud at about minus 14 LUFS for streaming conformity, Spotify or Apple Music similarly, YouTube with true peak values adjusted to the platform. Included: full sonic refinement across the whole set, loudness balancing between individual tracks, bass management, stereo image work, true peak limiting, LUFS configuration for the platform, delivery in the right file format (WAV plus MP3 320 kbps). The most popular option. Mix series mastering
A podcast series or DJ mix series with a consistent sound
For regular releases. With monthly podcast series, weekly Mixcloud releases or ongoing DJ mix series on particular genres or festivals, I develop a consistent sound concept across several episodes. The first episode serves as the reference for the concept with a detailed mastering configuration: platform LUFS standards, EQ character, bass management strategy, stereo treatment. Further episodes are mastered consistently with that concept, so that your audience recognises you by the sound and the mix profile builds a continuous sonic identity. Sensible for DJs with a clear career strategy or a genre profile to build. A short conversation about the concept makes sense with the first job, after which a simple email workflow is enough for the following episodes.
Transition optimisation for problematic crossfades
If your mix contains hard or untidy crossfades, say because the recording conditions at home were not ideal, because certain track combinations call for difficult transitions, or because a live recording from a club or bar shows problems at the transitions, that can be worked on as an add on. Loudness crossfading between difficult track changes is strengthened, EQ transitions at the borders are made smoother, breaks in the stereo image are minimised. Important: mastering cannot create missing transitions after the fact. The transitions have to be there in the mix already, and they only get improved sonically.
Removing silence between tracks or at the start and end
Recordings at home often contain unintended silent passages, say because the recording started earlier than the mix, because pauses crept in between tracks, or because the end of the mix still contains silence. I remove these silent passages, so that the mix cuts professionally and comes across cleanly on the platforms. Sensible for mixes that were not recorded in one continuous session, or when optimising a release after the fact.

Three factors that set this DJ mix mastering apart from standard single track mastering.
DJ mix mastering is not simply single track mastering applied to a long mix. Three factors make the difference in professional DJ mix refinement.
LUFS configuration for each platform instead of one solution for all
Standard single track mastering mostly works with streaming conventions, about minus 14 LUFS for Spotify and Apple Music. DJ mix mastering has to be configured per platform: Soundcloud can come across considerably louder (about minus 8 LUFS) and professionally mastered mixes use that loudness range, because unmastered mixes sound audibly weaker beside professional competitors. Mixcloud, Spotify and YouTube normalise similarly to minus 14 LUFS but need different true peak configurations. With a multi platform master, several versions with different LUFS values are delivered, so that you reach the optimal loudness on every platform. This per platform configuration is standard in DJ mix mastering and differs clearly from a generic streaming master.
Consistent loudness across 30 to 120 minutes instead of 3 to 5 minutes
A typical single master is about 3 to 5 minutes of music from one production, with a consistent sonic picture and a consistent loudness character. A DJ mix is 30 to 120 minutes of audio, often with 15 to 30 different tracks from different sources: Beatport files (mastered in a modern way, loud), your own productions (often not finally mastered yet), vinyl rips (analogue, with different dynamics), Bandcamp releases (mastered in various ways), older tracks (often quieter than modern productions). The loudness consistency between these sources has to be shaped actively in DJ mix mastering, so that the mix works as a coherent set instead of a patchwork of tracks at different volumes. That multi track consistency is a technical challenge of its own that standard single track mastering does not handle.
Bass management and transition optimisation specific to DJ mixes
DJ mixes have particular bass demands. The bass is the foundation of the mix, but it has to stay consistent across long stretches of the set without being thrown off balance by the different track sources. When the genre changes within a mix (say from deep house to techno, from hip-hop to drum and bass) the bass character changes dramatically, and in mastering that gets harmonised so that the mix stays energetically consistent. On top of that, the transitions are smoothed sonically: loudness crossfading is strengthened when track A ends quietly and track B starts loud, EQ transitions are made softer, breaks in the stereo image are minimised. This work, specific to DJ mixes, is not part of standard single track mastering but is an essential part of the DJ mix mastering workflow.
These three factors, LUFS configuration for each platform, consistent loudness across long stretches of a set and bass management specific to DJ mixes, make the difference between standard single track mastering and professional DJ mix mastering.

01 The first listen
You hear your mix on Soundcloud with punch instead of fatigue
The moment when you upload your mix to Soundcloud after the mastering is finished and hear it through the platform for the first time is often surprising. Suddenly your mix sounds loud and punchy instead of the familiar fatigue of a recording made at home. The bass energy stands firm across the whole set, the transitions feel professional, the individual songs are balanced in loudness. Many DJs say after hearing their mastered mix for the first time that they can now share it with others without embarrassment, which often was not the case with the unmastered mix, because it could not keep up sonically with the competition.
02 The effect on the platforms
Higher click rates and longer listening times on the streaming platforms
Platform algorithms judge DJ mixes not only by sound quality but also by listening behaviour: how long listeners stay with the mix, how often they click away, how often they like or repost it. Mastered mixes statistically have higher engagement, because they convince acoustically straight away and listeners stay longer. For Soundcloud DJs who look after their profile actively, that has a noticeable effect on reach: higher click rates in recommendation feeds, more reposts by other DJ profiles, a better position in algorithmic searches. On Mixcloud and other streaming platforms the effect is similar.
03 Chasing bookings
A professional impression with club and festival applications
Club bookers, festival organisers and label managers hear dozens of DJ demos every day. The first impression often forms within the first 60 seconds. If your demo sounds clean and professional immediately, you have a chance of a detailed listen. If your demo sounds weaker than other applicants, you are often out before the track selection has even been considered. Mastered demo material gets you over that first acoustic hurdle. You are heard like an established DJ, which puts your track selection, your mixing style and your grasp of the genre in the foreground. That effect is often directly measurable in the responses you get and the resident enquiries that follow.

Sonic recognisability across every platform
With an active presence on several platforms (Soundcloud, Mixcloud, your own website, Bandcamp, YouTube), acoustic inconsistencies often arise without mastering: your mix sounds different on Soundcloud than on Mixcloud, and different again on YouTube. That inconsistency blurs your sonic identity as a DJ. With a multi platform master and a consistent sonic character across all versions, a uniform acoustic picture emerges. Listeners recognise you by the sound, whatever platform they come across you on. That consistency of sonic identity becomes a subtle but lastingly effective lever in your career.
05 It works everywhere
Your mix sounds equally good in the car, in headphones and on a club system
Unmastered recordings from home often only sound good on one particular playback system, say the studio monitors of your home setup. On other devices the mixes fall apart: in the car the bass is missing, in a phone speaker something booms, on a club system it sounds dull, in cheap headphones the sense of space disappears. With professional mastering the mix is tested for translation, for consistency across playback systems. The result: your mix sounds equally good everywhere, which raises the chance that listeners like it on their own devices and share it.
06 Over time
Your DJ mix collection grows into an acoustic career library
With every mastered DJ mix your personal mix collection grows, like an acoustic career library with a uniform sound quality. What you master today you will still be able to show in your profile in 5 or 10 years without it sounding dated. Unlike unmastered mixes (which can feel weaker with every change in platform loudness standards), professionally mastered mixes age well, because they are made to the technical level of their time. For DJs with a long term career strategy, an acoustically consistent profile builds up over the years that documents your musical development without sonic breaks between old and new releases.

Good preparation for the recording at home makes the difference between a flawless mastering result and unnecessary rounds of correction. Six points to bear in mind before you record your DJ mix.

Direct out instead of a microphone
How are you recording?
Always direct out from your DJ mixer into your audio interface or into the recording function of your DJ software. Please do not record with a microphone in front of the speaker, because such recordings are sonically problematic for good mastering because of room reverb and room acoustics. With Pioneer DJM mixers use USB recording, with DJ software (Rekordbox, Serato, Traktor, Mixxx, Virtual DJ) use internal recording, with a hardware setup use the record out through RCA or jack into a USB audio interface.

The file format
WAV or AIFF, never MP3 for the recording
Record as WAV or AIFF at 24 bit with a sample rate of 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz. MP3 or other compressed formats lead to a loss of quality and are not ideal for mastering. With DJ software, choose WAV rather than MP3 explicitly in the settings. 16 bit is possible but 24 bit is better, because there is more headroom in the digital resolution.

Headroom in the recording
3 to 6 dB below the maximum level
Leave about 3 to 6 dB of headroom in the recording. Peaks should not go above minus 3 dB, and ideally hover around minus 6 dB. If your recording is already at the maximum level (0 dB) or clips above it, the recording is problematic for good mastering, because overload in the recording cannot be repaired by mastering. When in doubt, record quieter rather than too loud, because the loudness is raised in mastering anyway.

A continuous recording
Without gaps and without stopping in between
Record the whole mix in one continuous take, without stopping in between or restarting the recording. Pauses create sonic breaks that mastering cannot even out. If the mix is going to be very long and you need a break, plan it beforehand and use the pause functions built into the DJ mixer instead of interrupting the recording.

The target platform
Which platform or platforms?
In your enquiry simply say which platform or platforms the mix should be mastered for: Soundcloud, Mixcloud, Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Bandcamp, your own website, a radio station, a podcast platform. For several platforms, a multi platform master with separate LUFS versions. For particular platforms with specific loudness requirements (say the BBC for FM radio), mention that accordingly.

A tracklist and a delivery date
A tracklist for cue points, a date for the planning
For Mixcloud releases a tracklist with timestamps for the cue point function is sensible, because Mixcloud then shows which track is playing while people listen. If you have one, send the tracklist with timestamps along. Give a delivery date, so that the mastering work is scheduled to suit your release plan. With time critical releases, ask early.

An enquiry with the concept for the mix
You simply write me a short email or WhatsApp message. The important details: the length of the mix in minutes, the target platform or platforms (Soundcloud, Mixcloud, Spotify, YouTube, Bandcamp, your own website), the genre of the mix, your recording setup (DJ software or a hardware DJ mixer), if applicable a tracklist with timestamps for cue points on Mixcloud, and the delivery date you want. For single mix mastering a simple email enquiry is enough. For a multi platform master and mix series mastering a short conversation about the concept makes sense.

Uploading the audio & a first analysis
You send me your recorded DJ mix as a WAV or AIFF file through a cloud link (WeTransfer, Dropbox, Google Drive, your own cloud) or directly as an email attachment for file sizes under 25 MB. Once it arrives I check your mix first: the loudness over time, a spectral analysis for EQ consistency, the stereo distribution, and if applicable I identify problematic spots (breaks at transitions, silent passages, jumps in level). If anything is unclear or needs correcting, you get a short reply beforehand about whether the recording is ready for mastering or whether corrections would make sense.

The mastering work
In the mastering phase itself: loudness balancing between the individual tracks in the mix, LUFS configuration for the platform, bass management across the whole set, EQ harmonisation between the track sources, stereo image work, true peak limiting against platform distortion, subtle saturation for the warmth typical of a DJ mix. With a multi platform master, several versions with different LUFS values are made. With transition optimisation as an add on, problematic transitions are worked on as well.

Handover & a listening test
I deliver the finished masters in the file formats you need: WAV 24 bit as the lossless master, MP3 320 kbps for uploading directly to the platform, and if applicable further versions for a multi platform master. On request, ID3 tag configuration with your DJ name, the mix title, genre tags and an embedded cover. For Mixcloud releases, optional cue point markers for the tracklist display. Handover through a secure cloud link with clearly named files. After that comes a listening test on your usual playback systems (the car, a phone, studio monitors), and if you want anything corrected, a short message and then an adjustment where needed.

No recording at the studio
You record your DJ set at home
Worth knowing: I do not provide DJ hardware, no Pioneer CDJs, no turntables, no DJ mixers such as the Pioneer DJM or Xone, no DJ controllers, no club atmosphere. So you record your DJ set yourself at home on your own DJ setup, either with a hardware DJ mixer and direct out recording, or with DJ software such as Rekordbox, Serato, Traktor, Mixxx or Virtual DJ using the internal recording function. You send the finished audio material for refinement, all of it remotely.
A clear separation in mastering

• Headroom: 3 to 6 dB below the maximum level
• Without gaps in one recording

I deliberately do not offer DJ mix mastering as a rigid standard product in the studio shop, because every project is tailored individually to your specific mix length, your target platform and your purpose. For single mix mastering without complex requirements, the quickest route is a short email or WhatsApp enquiry: describe the length of your mix, the target platform (Soundcloud, Mixcloud, Spotify, YouTube), the genre, and send the cloud link to your recording. For a multi platform master or mix series mastering there is a short conversation about the concept, and with a mix series the sound concept for the whole run is developed together, so that the following episodes are mastered consistently with the character of your mix profile. The whole workflow runs entirely remotely: you send the DJ mix you recorded at home by cloud link, and the mastered mix comes back by cloud link. You do not have to come to the studio for it, and there is no geographical limit. Important once more: I do not record DJ sets at the studio, because I do not provide DJ hardware. You record the mix yourself at home on your own DJ setup with direct out recording from your DJ mixer or internal recording in your DJ software. For short questions about preparing the recording, choosing a platform, LUFS standards or a realistic estimate of the time, a WhatsApp message or a brief email works too. If the recording has sonic problems (clipping, heavy noise, phase problems), there is also the audio restoration service.
